Untold Story Of "Linkin Park"

Mike Shinoda, Rob Bourdon, and Brad Delson, three buddies from high school, established Linkin Park. The three went to Agoura High School in the Los Angeles suburb of Agoura Hills, California. The three recruited Joe Hahn, Dave "Phoenix" Farrell, and Mark Wakefield to play in their band, which was then known as Xero, after beginning to take their musical interests more seriously following their high school graduation. Despite having little means, the band started writing songs and producing them in Shinoda's makeshift bedroom studio in 1996. This led to the creation of the four-track demo album Xero, which was published in November 1997. However, after they were unable to sign a record deal, tensions and frustrations inside the band escalated. Wakefield, who was the band's vocalist at the time, was motivated by the lack of success and the impasse in their advancement.

The Band Name

Wakefield left the band in response to Xero's commercial failure, which made way for Chester Bennington to take over as frontman in 1999. After facing legal issues with another act with a similar name and changing the group's name to Hybrid Theory (a reference to the band's hybrid sound, which blended rock and rap), the group decided to change its name back to Lincoln Park in memory of a local park in Santa Monica, California, that the band members passed on their way to recording sessions. The band changed their name to Linkin Park after learning that other people already had that domain name online.

Instant Superstars

In 2000, Linkin Park issued its debut album. One of the biggest debuts of all time, Hybrid Theory—the band's rejected band name—sold approximately 10 million copies in the United States alone and produced a number of top hits, including "In the End" and "Crawling." In the process, the group rose to prominence as one of the rap-rock genre's most popular acts.

Working With Jay-Z

After the success of their 2003 album Meteora, the band's well-received follow-up to Hybrid Theory, the group worked with rap icon Jay-Z on a song titled Collision Course in 2004. The album tapped on the growing popularity of "mash-ups," which involve combining elements from two different songs, frequently belonging to different musical genres, to create a single new song. Collision Course, a mashup of songs by Jay-Z and Linkin Park, peaked at number one on the Billboard album charts and established itself as one of the most well-known mashup efforts ever.

Experimenting With a New Sound

While Collision Course saw the group fully adopting hip-hop textures and Meteora signified a continuation of the Hybrid Theory rock-meets-rap strategy, Linkin Park's subsequent studio album would shift away from rapping and into atmospheric, introspective compositions. Minutes to Midnight, the band's 2007 album, sold more than 2 million copies in the United States despite having less commercial success than their previous studio albums and placing four singles on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.

Additionally, "Shadow of the Day," a single, sold platinum copies and took home the Best Rock Video prize at the 2008 MTV VMAs.
