About Pawleys Island, South Carolina

Early 1700s saw the settlement of Pawleys Island by families of rice planters who held plantations on surrounding rivers. The planters were aware that staying on the rivers during the summer was bad for their family and that the seashore was far healthier. In spite of their ignorance about malaria in the 1700s, they were nevertheless able to flee! Every year, in May, they transferred their families, as well as their horses, cows, bedding, food, and furniture, to Pawleys, where they stayed until the first frost in November.

The charm of Pawleys, which is still present, has developed from this relaxed lifestyle. 12 homes in the historic area, which date from the late 1700s to the mid 1800s, are also still standing. The main daily activities are swimming, fishing, and tanning. Dining out, lengthy discussions on screened porches, shopping in a mainland boutique, or taking a stroll on the beach make up the nightlife.
