Popularly known as Mr Bean, Rowan Sebastian Atkinson is an English actor, comedian and writer from America. His first prominent work was in the BBC sketch comedy shows Not the Nine O’Clock News. Rowan earned BAFTA for Best Entertainment Performance award in 1981. He is best known for his work on the sitcom Mr Bean (1990–1995). His journey to the most famous character around the globe wasn’t an easy one. He endured his share of failures and rejections before getting a chance to step into the limelight. Born on 6 January 1955, Rowan Atkinson is the youngest son of Eric Atkinson, a farmer and company director, and Ella May. Brought up in a small, middle-class family of six people, Rowan lived with his parents and three elder brothers. Soon after his birth, the family moved from Consett to Anglican. Rowan gained education at Durham Choristers School at an introductory level, following which he enrolled at St Bees School for higher education. He had a speaking disability right from his childhood. This gave him a tough time in his childhood and at the start of his career. Because of his stuttering, he suffered a lot. He was constantly bullied and teased because of his look and his speaking disability. This made him very timid and withdrawn. He didn’t have a lot of friends and the several rejections left him feel lonely.

Being reasonably he was very much interested in science, Rowan secured a place at Newcastle University. He enlisted there for an undergraduate course in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Later, He decided to do a Master in the same and again, his fortune favoured him, and he got admission at The Queen’s College, Oxford. he decided to pursue a career in Sciencefield. One of his teachers commented that, “Nothing is outstanding about him. I really don’t expect him to become a fantastic scientist.” He proved everybody wrong when he got placed at the oxford university. During his days at Oxford, he started realizing his passion towards acting. But however though he was very much eager to try it out, the biggest hurdle that stood past his way was his stuttering. So leaving acting aside he continued his master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.

From an early age, Rowan Atkinson suffered a speaking disorder called stuttering or stammering. Along with that, His large eyes and unusual expressions made him look different from all other kids. Rowan got teased and bullied at school for his stammering and looks. Everyone called him an alien because people thought he was strange. Eventually, Rowan lost all his confidence and became a shy and withdrawn kid. With the passage of time, he stopped noticing everyone and dived into science.

Into Oxford University, He earned his master’s degree in electrical engineering before beginning his career in the acting industry. After graduating, Rowan firmly decided to pursue his dream of being an actor. Following which he enrolled in a comedy group. But this he getting rejected because he didn’t have a good face and grand body in addition to his stammering problem as well. Although being devastated, he never stopped believing in himself. This not only made him overcome this disorder, but also he created it as an inspiration for himself. This is exactly where Rowan’s life changed. During his masters, he created a strange, surreal and non-speaking character, “Mr Bean”. With this character, Rowan attracted the attention of everyone. As a result, he became globally famous as “Mr. Bean “.

Marriage Life



Rowan married Sunetra in February 1990, although they had met years before while Sunetra was working as make-up artist with the BBC. The ex-couple have two children together – Lily, who is an actress, and a son Benjamin. In 2013, at the age of 58, Atkinson began an affair with 32-year-old comedian Louise Ford after they met while performing in a play together. Ford ended her relationship with comedian James Acaster in order to be with Atkinson, who in turn separated from his wife in 2014 and divorced her in 2015.
